Vung Bau Beach Phu Quoc: A First-Timer's Trip Planner
Vung Bau Beach is one of the quieter rewards of northwest Phu Quoc — a half-moon bay with golden sand, coastal forest and almost no crowds. It takes a little more effort to reach than the town beaches, so here's everything you need to plan a smooth visit: where it is, how to get there, when to go, and where to eat and stay.
Where Vung Bau Beach Sits on the Phu Quoc Map
Vung Bau lies on the island's northwest coast, between Cua Can Beach and Bai Dai Beach, away from the busier south. It pairs well with a day exploring the north, since several popular stops sit within easy reach:
- Vinpearl Safari
- Grand World
- Ganh Dau Cape
That makes it simple to combine a quiet afternoon on the sand with a bigger attraction earlier in the day.
Getting There by Motorbike, Taxi or Private Car
The beach is roughly 20 km from Duong Dong Town, about a 30 to 40 minute drive. You have two practical options, with approximate costs:
- Motorbike rental: around 120,000–200,000 VND per day
- Taxi or private car: around 300,000–400,000 VND one way
A motorbike gives you the most flexibility for chasing the sunset on your own schedule, but the roads this far out can be rough — ride carefully, particularly after rain. If you'd rather not drive, a private car is the more comfortable choice for couples or families.
When to Visit for the Best Weather and Sunsets
The dry season, from about November to April, is the most reliable window for sun and calm water. The rainy season brings cheaper stays but less dependable weather and rougher roads, so weigh the savings against the conditions.
Whichever month you choose, aim for late afternoon: Vung Bau faces west, and the best light falls between 5:30 and 6:30 PM, when the bay turns orange and violet.
Choosing Where to Sleep and Eat at Vung Bau Beach
Accommodation ranges from simple to genuinely luxurious. A quick scan of the options:
- Vung Bau Resort — mid-range, right on the sand, with a private beach area
- Mai Phuong Resort — budget bungalows with a quiet, family-run feel
- Nam Nghi Coral Peninsula — five-star, on a private peninsula, with boat access to the offshore Rock Island Club
- Bamboo Cottages — solar-powered, rustic and eco-conscious
- Wild Beach Phu Quoc Resort — secluded and simple, set further north by the forest
Food is limited but good. Bamboo Restaurant and Tree House Restaurant both serve fresh seafood in a relaxed, leafy setting steps from the sand. For something more local, the evening seafood stalls — Oc An and Oc Dem — set out plastic tables, cold beers and shellfish cooked on the spot.
Worth ordering: grilled sea urchin, grilled mackerel, a light herring salad, or a grouper hotpot to share. Prices at the stalls are reasonable, and the catch is laid out fresh so you can pick what you want before it hits the grill.
An evening here — cold drinks, the grill smoking, the sea a few steps away — tends to be one of the most memorable parts of any Vung Bau trip, and a good reason to stay until after dark rather than leaving once the sun is down.
