Step 1: Pick the right bike for your trip
Match the bike to your plan:
- Town and short rides: a budget manual like a Wave Alpha (80,000–120,000 VND/day)
- Full-day island trips: a mid-tier automatic — Honda Air Blade, Vision or Yamaha Sirius (120,000–150,000 VND/day)
- Long distances or extra comfort: a premium model like a Honda PCX or Yamaha Nouvo (up to 250,000 VND/day)
Staying a while? Ask about weekly (~600,000–900,000 VND) or monthly (1.5–2.5 million VND) rates.
Step 2: Sort your documents
To ride legally you need an International Driving Permit (1968 Convention, with motorbike endorsement) or a valid Vietnamese licence. Many shops won't strictly check, especially for automatics — but without a valid licence, insurance may not cover an accident. Decide with that in mind.
Step 3: Inspect the bike and film it
Before you ride off, check the tires, brakes, lights, horn and fuel level, and note any existing scratches. Take clear photos or a short video from every angle. It's your proof against being blamed for old damage.
Step 4: Choose deposit over passport
Shops usually ask for one of two things:
- A passport copy plus a small deposit (around 500k–1M VND) — recommended
- Your original passport held until return — less ideal
Go with the deposit: you keep your passport, the risk is lower, and returns are quicker. Just carry some cash.
Step 5: Arrange delivery and return
Most shops deliver free to the airport, ferry terminal or your hotel, usually within 15–30 minutes. When you're done, many let you simply leave the keys at reception. Confirm the fuel policy (full or half-tank) and that a helmet or two is included before you sign off.
That's it — five steps from "should I?" to "let's go." Choose a trusted shop, ride on the right, keep your helmet on, and the whole island opens up.
