First-Time Scuba Diving in Phu Quoc – Honest Review 2026

I didn’t plan to go scuba diving in Phu Quoc.

It was one of those last-minute decisions — the kind you book a day before, not knowing if it’ll be worth it or just another tourist activity. I’d seen the photos, read a few mixed reviews, and wasn’t sure what to expect.

This is my honest, first-time experience: what I paid, how the day actually went, what surprised me, and whether I’d recommend it in 2026.

Why I Chose Scuba Diving in Phu Quoc Island

Scuba Diving in Phu Quoc Island

Scuba diving in Phu Quoc Island wasn’t originally on my list.

But after a couple of days on the island, most activities started to feel similar — beaches, cafes, sunset spots. Diving felt like something different, something that could actually stand out.

What convinced me:

  • It’s beginner-friendly (no license needed)
  • Prices are relatively affordable compared to other countries
  • Most tours combine diving + snorkeling + island hopping

I wasn’t expecting anything “world-class.” I just wanted to try something new without overthinking it.

Booking Process & Scuba Diving in Phu Quoc Cost I Paid

Booking was surprisingly simple — and also a bit confusing at the same time.

Prices varied depending on where I asked:

  • Hotel desk: higher price, limited details
  • Online (WhatsApp/Zalo): better deals, more flexible
  • Direct operator: best clarity, sometimes better value

In the end, I booked a full-day group tour.

Scuba diving in Phu Quoc cost I paid: ~$65 USD total

Included: 2 dives, snorkeling, lunch, hotel pickup, equipment

No hidden fees, but a few optional extras:

  • Underwater photos/video: +$10–$20
  • Tip for instructor (optional but common)

Looking back, the price felt fair for a full-day experience.

The Dive Experience – Hour by Hour

The Dive Experience

The Dive Experience

  • 8:00 AMHotel pickup: Minivan picked me up on time. Group size: around 10–12 people.
  • 9:00 AMArrive at An Thoi port: Quick briefing, gear check, then onto the boat.
  • 10:30 AMFirst dive (training + shallow reef): This was the hardest part mentally. Breathing underwater feels unnatural at first. The instructor stayed close the whole time.

After a few minutes, it became surprisingly calm.

What I saw: Coral, small reef fish, nothing extreme — but still impressive for a first dive.

  • 12:00 PMLunch on the boat: Simple but decent. Good break between dives.
  • 1:30 PM Second dive: Much better than the first. More relaxed, more confident, and I could actually enjoy the surroundings.
  • 3:00 PMSnorkeling & chill time: Even non-divers in the group were enjoying this part.
  • 4:30 PM Return

3 Things I Wish I Knew Before

1. The first 5 minutes are the hardest

If you panic early, it can ruin the experience. Once you get used to breathing, everything changes.

2. Visibility isn’t always crystal clear

Some days are great, some are average. Don’t expect Maldives-level water.

3. Not all tours are the same

Group size and instructor attention matter more than price.

My Honest Scuba Diving Phu Quoc Reviews & Rating

So, is it worth it?

Short answer: Yes — with the right expectations.

This isn’t a destination for advanced divers chasing rare marine life. But for a first-time experience, scuba diving Phu Quoc reviews like mine tend to agree on one thing: it’s easy, accessible, and surprisingly enjoyable.

My rating: 8/10

  • Beginner-friendly
  • Good value for money
  • Fun, memorable experience
  • Reef is not the most vibrant
  • Experience depends on operator quality

Would I do it again? Yes — but I’d choose a smaller group or a more premium operator.
